Learn the Famous Keliki Art Style from Local Masters
Most art classes in Bali offer generic painting sessions where a large group of tourists paints the same pre-drawn design in a busy studio. You rarely learn the deep spiritual history of the art form, the traditional ink techniques, or work closely with a recognized master painter.
As a licensed boutique Travel Agency Ubud, we do things differently. Our private miniature painting workshop focuses entirely on Keliki artβan extraordinary Balinese style known for extreme detail, rich storytelling, and hours of patient brushwork. Our classes are held in a quiet, airy home studio in Taro village, north of Ubud.
You sit alongside multi-generational Keliki masters who teach you the traditional methods of drawing, shading, and ink washing. This slow-paced, meditative experience is limited to your private group, allowing you to learn this rich highland art form at your own comfortable pace.
Your Miniature Painting Creative Process
This hands-on workshop is completely private, allowing you to focus on the fine details under the patient guidance of your local artisan. You will complete the full traditional Keliki painting journey:
1. Warm Welcome & Historical Introduction
Arrive at our family studio in Taro to a refreshing, cold herbal welcome drink and sweet Balinese treats. Your master instructor will share the history of Keliki art, which originated in the nearby village of Keliki in the 1970s as a way to preserve detailed Balinese mythology and rural village scenes on small, portable canvases.
2. Fine Pencil Sketching
Select a traditional themeβsuch as local temple ceremonies, lush jungle landscapes, or legendary Balinese storiesβand begin sketching your design on fine art paper. Your instructor will show you how to scale down your sketch to fit a small, intricate frame.
3. Traditional Chinese Ink Shading
Learn the core of the Keliki style: applying thousands of tiny, precise ink dots and thin lines using bamboo pens or fine-tipped brushes. You will build up rich shadows, gradients, and depth over several detailed layers to give your painting its signature three-dimensional look.
4. Colored Watercolor Washes
Once your ink shading is complete, apply light, delicate layers of watercolor to bring your drawing to life. Your master artist will show you how to blend soft colors together to highlight the details without covering up your intricate black-and-white ink lines.
5. Extreme Detail & Polish
Use fine magnifying glasses to add the final, tiny details to your painting, such as the veins on tropical leaves, individual scales on mythological creatures, or the texture of woven temple baskets.
6. Framing Your Artwork
Mount your completed miniature masterpiece inside a beautiful, locally carved wooden frame. Take home a unique, deeply detailed piece of Balinese heritage to display on your wall.
