Create Your Own Wearable Textile Art with Local Artisans

Bringing home a commercial souvenir cannot compare to displaying a piece of fabric you designed and dyed with your own hands. Our private textile art class offers a quiet, personal space to learn the age-old Balinese craft of wax-resist fabric painting directly from village artisans who have practiced these techniques for decades.

As a licensed boutique Travel Agency Ubud, we focus on real, unhurried cultural connections. Our private classes are held in an airy, shaded garden pavilion in ancient Taro village, north of Tegallalang. You sit alongside skilled local painters who guide you through every stage of the process, helping you turn a piece of raw white cloth into a stunning, custom textile painting to take home.

Your Hands-On Batik Painting Creative Process

This traditional workshop is completely private, allowing you to work at your own comfortable speed. Under the patient guidance of your village host, you will complete the full traditional fabric dyeing journey:

1. Sketching Your Design

Begin by drawing your design on a piece of high-quality, pre-washed cotton or primissima fabric. You can sketch a traditional Balinese pattern (such as tropical frangipani flowers, local forest animals, or sacred geometric symbols) or create your own modern design.

2. Applying the Hot Wax (Wax-Resist)

Learn how to use a cantingβ€”a traditional copper wax-pen with a tiny spout. Dip your copper pen into a pot of melted beeswax and paraffin to trace your pencil lines. The hot wax sinks into the fibers, blocking out the dye and keeping those areas pure white. For broader fields, you can use traditional brushes.

3. Hand-Dyeing and Coloring

Dye your fabric using cold basins filled with eco-friendly textile dyes. You can paint different colors directly onto the fabric sections with fine brushes for a multi-colored look, or submerge the entire cloth in dye baths to create beautiful, layered background shades.

4. Setting the Color

Apply a cold fixing solution (sodium silicate) over the dyed fabric. This sets the pigments permanently into the cotton threads, ensuring the colors remain bright and do not bleed when washed.

5. Melting Away the Wax Borders

Immerse your fabric in a pot of boiling water. Watch as the hot water melts the wax, releasing it from the cotton fibers. As the wax floats away, it reveals the beautiful white lines underneath, framing your colorful painted designs perfectly.

6. Shadow Drying and Finishing

Rinse your completed artwork in clean water and hang it to dry in the shade. Your custom hand-painted canvas is ready to be framed as wall art or used as a beautiful local tablecloth.
