1. Warm Compound Welcome & Wood Selection

Arrive at our family compound in Taro to receive a refreshing, cold herbal welcome drink and fresh Balinese sweets. Your master instructor will explain the properties of different local timbers, including crocodile wood, hibiscus wood, jackfruit wood, and fragrant sandalwood, helping you select the perfect block for your design.

2. Sketching & Transferring Your Design

Select a traditional Balinese pattern—such as a sacred lotus flower, a sleeping cat, a traditional barong mask, or a peaceful Buddha face—and sketch it onto paper. Transfer your finished design lines directly onto the flat face of your selected wood block.

3. Outlining & Rough Carving

Learn how to hold and guide traditional iron chisels (pahat) using a heavy wooden mallet (pantek). Under the watchful eye of your instructor, carve away the outer corners and excess wood to establish the clean, rough outline of your sculpture.

4. Detail Sculpting & Curved Gouges

Swap your heavy outlining chisels for curved detail gouges. Learn the steady, controlled wrist movements used by Balinese craftsmen to carve delicate facial features, intricate leaf veins, and smooth curves into the timber.

5. Graded Sanding & Smoothing

Smooth down the rough tool marks using graded sheets of sandpaper. You will progress from rough grit to ultra-fine grain, polishing the surface to bring out the rich, natural grain patterns and warm colors of the wood.

6. Natural Wax Finishing

Apply a coating of organic beeswax to seal and protect your hand-carved sculpture. The wax highlights the wood's beautiful textures and provides a soft, rich sheen. Take home your completed wooden masterpiece as a beautiful keepsake of Balinese culture.
