Feel the magic as you sketch your pattern, carefully apply hot liquid wax using a traditional copper canting pen, and watch the vibrant colors bleed into the fabric to bring your design to life.

Your artistic journey begins upon arrival at our peaceful village studio. We’ll welcome you with herbal tea, coffee, and local Balinese snacks. Our artists will introduce you to the fascinating history and cultural significance of Batik in Indonesia, explaining the deep symbolism behind common traditional patterns.

From Mind to Fabric :

Designing Your Masterpiece

This is where your creativity takes flight. You will begin by sketching your design onto the cotton fabric. Whether you want to trace one of our beautiful pre-drawn traditional templates (like mandalas or local wildlife) or sketch your own unique vision from scratch, our artists will be right there to assist you.

The Soul of Batik :

Applying the Wax

Experience the most iconic step of the process! You’ll learn how to hold and use a traditional tool called a canting (a small copper spouted pen). You will carefully trace your pencil lines with hot, melted wax. This wax acts as a barrier (the "resist") that will keep your vibrant dye colors separated.

A Splash of Color :

The Dyeing Process

Now for the fun part—watch your creation come to life! Armed with brushes and beautiful fabric dyes, your instructor will guide you on how to add and blend colors into different sections of your piece, creating a vibrant, layered effect that makes Batik so visually stunning.

The Grand Reveal :

After the dyeing is complete, the fabric must dry, and the wax is boiled off. You will witness the final, magical reveal of your unique Batik masterpiece—a beautiful, colorful textile infused with your own creativity and the spirit of Bali, ready to be taken home!

Do I need any prior art or painting experience?

Not at all! 99% of our guests are complete beginners. Our friendly and patient artists are wonderful teachers and will guide you through every single step of the process. We also provide beautifully stenciled templates for you to trace, making the drawing process incredibly easy.

What size will the Batik piece be?

You will work on a standard-sized piece of premium cotton fabric (roughly the size of a large napkin or small tapestry). It is perfect for framing as a beautiful wall hanging, using as a decorative element for a cushion, or keeping as a centerpiece for a larger sewing project back home.

Is this class suitable for children?

Yes, creative children aged 10 and up absolutely love this class! It’s a fantastic way for them to engage with Indonesian culture and art. Because we use hot melted wax, we simply ask that children are supervised and have good focus for the detailed work involved.

What is the difference between this and regular painting?

Batik is a unique “wax-resist dyeing” technique. Instead of just applying thick paint to a canvas, you use hot wax to draw a design that “resists” the liquid dye. This creates the distinctive, beautiful white lines and layered colors that make traditional Batik so special and globally recognized.
