Is this class suitable for children?

Yes, this is a wonderful, highly engaging activity for families! Children absolutely love the hands-on process, especially using the traditional grater and watching the oil "magically" separate in the wok. We ask that children under 10 have active adult supervision near the cooking fire.

How much coconut oil will I make?

You will create and take home your own 100ml bottle of pure, fragrant, virgin coconut oil. This is the perfect travel size to take on a plane, and the ideal amount to use for natural skincare, haircare, or cooking back home.

What is the difference between this method and store-bought coconut oil?

Store-bought coconut oil is often mass-produced using modern, industrial cold-pressing machines or chemical extraction. You will learn the pure, traditional "heated" method used by Balinese ancestors. The result is an incredibly fresh oil with a rich, toasted, nutty aroma that you simply cannot find in a supermarket.

Is this a difficult process to learn?

Not at all! Our local instructors are very patient and skilled at guiding absolute beginners. They make the process simple, fun, and easy to understand for everyone.

Discover the ancient secret to Bali’s “Liquid Gold.” We invite you into our traditional family home in Taro Village to share a cherished tradition passed down through generations of Balinese women: the art of making pure, virgin coconut oil (VCO).

This is a truly hands-on, sensory experience that connects you to the heart of Balinese wellness and the incredible generosity of the coconut palm, which we proudly call our “Tree of Life.” Guided by the wonderful local women of our village, you will learn the entire journey from cracking the fresh coconut to simmering the rich milk and harvesting the fragrant, pure oil.

A Warm Welcome: The Coconut Introduction Your journey begins upon arrival at our traditional village home. We’ll greet you with a refreshing drink of fresh young coconut water. Your instructors will introduce you to the "Tree of Life" and explain the traditional, multi-step process we are about to begin together.

Hands-On Prep: Cracking & Grating It's time to get your hands dirty! You’ll learn how to select the perfect mature coconut, crack it open safely, and then grate the fresh white meat using a traditional Balinese grater. It's a surprisingly fun, rhythmic, and deeply satisfying step!

The Creamy Heart: Extracting Coconut Milk By mixing your freshly grated coconut with a little water and squeezing it firmly by hand, you will extract the rich, creamy coconut milk (known locally as santan). This pure, thick white liquid is the foundation of the golden oil you are about to create.

The Alchemist's Art: Simmering & Separating With patience and gentle heat, the coconut milk is simmered in a large traditional wok. Your guide will show you how to tend to the mixture. Watch as the room fills with a mouth-watering aroma, the water evaporates, and the fragrant oil magically separates from the coconut solids.

Liquid Gold: Harvesting Your Pure Oil This is the moment of triumph! Once the oil has clearly separated, we will carefully skim the pure, clear virgin coconut oil from the top. You'll marvel at the beautiful, fragrant liquid gold that you have just created with your own two hands.

A Treasure to Keep: Bottling & Tasting After allowing your oil to cool, you will pour it into a beautiful 100ml glass bottle to take home as a precious souvenir. We’ll share stories about its many uses in our daily lives, and even let you taste the delicious, sweet toasted coconut curds (blendo) left over from the cooking process!
